1. The Non-Vascular Dilemma of Bryophytes
Unlike vascular plants (tracheophytes) which utilize roots and xylem vessels to pump water against gravity via transpirational pull, mosses are completely non-vascular. They lack internal plumbing. In their natural habitat, bryophytes rely almost exclusively on external capillary conduction across their leaf surfaces (ectohydric hydration). If submerged in water, their cellular tissues choke on lack of dissolved oxygen; if exposed to dry HVAC air, they desicate into dormancy within 4 hours.
To maintain constant vegetative vigor in climate-controlled modern offices, the micro-environment must provide a constant relative humidity of 78%–86% while maintaining an aerated, damp substrate.
2. Jurin’s Law & The Sintered Volcanic Pumice Wick
MossPod replaces fibrous cotton cords or plastic sponges with a precision-sintered volcanic core quarried from inert basalt deposits. By controlling the pore grain size between 45 and 90 micrometers (μm), the core leverages Jurin's classic law of capillary rise:
h = (2 γ cos θ) / (ρ g r)
Where γ is surface tension of pure water (72.8 mN/m at 20°C), θ is the contact angle against porous volcanic silica, ρ is water density, g is gravitational acceleration, and r is the micro-pore radius. Because r is precisely calibrated to 65μm, water naturally rises 14.5 centimeters above the reservoir waterline—exactly matching the crest of our moss mounting bed.
3. Thermal Condensation Equilibrium Loop
As the 18-diode LED canopy warms the upper chamber of the borosilicate glass by 1.8°C during daytime mode, air expands slightly and drives transpiration vapor upwards. In the evening, as the diode cycle switches to the cooler 2200K amber mode, the glass dome cools faster than the dense ceramic reservoir below. This deliberate thermal differential causes micro-condensation along the fluted ridges of the dome, which guides water drops smoothly back down to the volcanic stone perimeter without splashing the delicate central moss cushion.
